First, preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease and flour two 8 or 9-inch round cake pans.

In a medium bowl, mix together 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour, 2 teaspoons baking powder, 1 teaspoon baking soda and 1 teaspoon salt.

In a separate bowl, cream together 1 cup butter and 1 1/2 cups sugar until light and fluffy. Add in 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract and 4 egg whites, one at a time, and mix until completely combined.

Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until combined. Slowly add in 1 cup of milk and mix until the batter is smooth.

Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean.

Let the cakes cool in the pans for about 10 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack. When the cakes are completely cool, frost with your favorite icing or glaze. Serve and enjoy!
