To start, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 8-inch round cake pans.
In a medium bowl, cream together 1 cup (2 sticks) of softened butter and 2 cups of granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in 4 large eggs, one at a time, until combined.
In a separate bowl, sift together 3 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. Alternately add the dry ingredients and 1 cup of whole milk to the creamed mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Beat until just combined.
Next, add 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract and mix until combined. Divide the batter equally between the two prepared pans and bake for 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.
