Ingredients:

– 3 cups all-purpose flour
– 2 cups granulated sugar
– 1 tablespoon baking powder
– 1 teaspoon baking soda
– 1 teaspoon salt
– 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
– 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
– 1 ½ cups buttermilk
– 4 large eggs

Instructions:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

2. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt.

3. In a separate bowl, cream together the butter and vanilla. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.

4. Add the dry ingredients alternately with the buttermilk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Beat just until combined.

5. Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

6. Cool in the pans for 10 minutes before turning out onto wire racks to cool completely.
