To make this classic cake recipe, you’ll need:

– 2 and 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

– 1 teaspoon baking powder

– 1 teaspoon baking soda

– 1/2 teaspoon salt

– 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened

– 1 and 3/4 cups granulated sugar

– 4 large eggs

– 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

– 1 cup buttermilk

– Powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)

To make the cake, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add the vanilla extract and mix until incorporated.

Alternate adding the flour mixture and buttermilk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.

Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared pans. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.

Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. Dust with powdered sugar, if desired. Enjoy!
